GOLD BOA’S FINE WIN

HIGH GLEE BACK TO FORM SEVERAL INQUIRIES AT DUNEDIN MEETING (From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, December 28. Although the fields for the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club s meeting were not big the racing throughout was of a high standard. The track was not affected by overnight rain and provided good going. The form of a number of the runners was instructive in view of their engagements at the New Year meetings in Southland. After the St. Andrews Handicap K A. Jones (rider of Queen of Song) lodged a complaint against D. O’Connor (rider of Silver Streak) for unfair tactics during the race. After investigation the judicial committee decided to take no action. A complaint was also lodged by D. O’Connor against P. T. Hogan for striking him in the jockey’s room after the St. Andrew’s Handicap. The committee decided to caution Hogan. An inquiry was held by the judicial committee into the running of Fireguard and after considering the matter the committee came to the following conclusion. “We view with suspicion the running of Fireguard today as compared with his running yesterday but in our opinion there is not quite sufficient evidence before us to justify a conviction under Rule 282, Part 2.” The age of Noble -Maiden, who contested the Juvenile Handicap, for two-year-olds, was questioned, but after a veterinary examination, her age—-two years—was confirmed. Noble- Maiden is a filly by Te Monanui from a Rose Noble mare and the fact that she is so well developed was the reason for the doubt. FIREGUARD WINS WELL The Taieri Hurdle Handicap provided a first-class race and the whole field had a chance at the top of the straight. Burwood led over the first hurdle from Last Link, Illora, Fireguard, Master Anomaly and Delrain. Running out of the straight Burwood ran down a fence but was three lengths clear into the back from Master Anomaly, and Fireguard at the head of a bunched field. The field bunched up down the back with Burwood still showing the way. At the far turn Burwood, Fireguard and Superex, who had made a fast run on the outer, were at the head of the field in close formation. Burwood was first into the straight but he Was soon headed by Fireguard. Fireguard went on to win well by three lengths and Burwood just hung on long enough to get second from Master Anomaly arid The Surgeon. Then came Delrain, Superex and Last Link. It was a particularly good race and points to the hurdle races being hard to win at the Southland meeting during the New Year. Fireguard gave a fine display and had something in hand at the finish. Burwood did not fence well at all and ran down two or three of the obstacles. Master Anomaly and The Surgeon both finished on well. ADINA’S FIRST Valmarch was sent out favourite in the Novice Handicap but he struck trouble in the straight otherwise he would have been closer than fifth. Bad News and Gay Vixen were cut out at the start, and Fayo was the first to show out from Financiere, Adina and Valmarch. Running to -the straight Adina had charge from Straightdell, Fayo, Slayer and Pink Del with Valmarch also handy. Adina was first on to the course proper and he came home well to win by three lengths. Straightdell hung on to be second from Slayer while Atalanta Lass was a neck away fourth. Then came Pink Del, Valmarch and Lochie River. Adina, who is nominated for the Invercargill Cup and other races on the Southland circuit, finished on particularly well but her turn was overdue. Valmarch may have been closer with a better run in the straight. He is a halfbrother by Valkyrian to Gold Boa and Dismiss. Lochie River made up a good deal of ground and loomed up in the run home. He put up quite a creditable showing. Slayer who paid over a quarter century for a place is a four-year-old gelding by Valkyrian from Battle Flag. DECISIVE WIN Noble Maiden and Lakomai held up the start of the Juvenile Handicap, and finally Noble Maiden was left when the signal was given. Ortyx was the first to jump out and was followed by Atua Rere and Raeburn. Atua Rere soon dropped out and at the three furlong post On Call, Improvident and Ortyx were in line with Kilrobe showing up among the others. Op Call led Ortyx and Improvident on to the course proper. On Call came on to win by three lengths from Ortyx who hung on better than on the first day. Kilrobe and Spendthrift finished on well from the back, the former getting up to be third by a neck. Then came Pink Bond, Improvident, Atua Rere and Raeburn. On Call did not start on the opening day but he held too many guns for the two-year-olds today. Ortyx hung on fairly well while a good showing had to be credited to Spendthrift who finished strongly from the back. Passaform (Balboa-Fairform) the first day’s winner finished second last. Atua Rere shaped well but Lakomai was not sighted. GOLD BOA’S GAMENESS Gold Boa put up a great performance to carry 9.10 and win the Grand Stand Handicap but Top Row was flying at the finish and got to within half a length of the winner. Viking and Silver Lark were slow away and Dissemble led from Gold Boa and the pair were joined by Janet Gaynor. At the far turn Gold Boa was clear of Janet Gaynor, Dissemble, Invoice, Silver Lark and Viking. Top Row improved his position to be fourth to Gold Boa, Janet Gaynor and Dissemble rounding the home turn with Silver Lark at the head of the others. Gold Boa led Top Row into the straight with Dissemble and Janet Gaynor leading the remainder. In the run home Gold Boa hung on well and withstood the dogged challenge of Top Row, who would have been hard to beat had he been handier earlier. Invoice was two lengths further back third, a head in front of Dissemble and then came Janet Gaynor, Viking and Silver Lark. Gold Boa received a great hearing on returning. She stayed on much better than on the first day. Top Row may have been unlucky but Janet Gaynor was a disappointment. Viking failed to show up at any stage of the running. DAVOLO CHIEF WINNER Davolo won the St. Andrew’s Handicap rather decisively and paid a good price for such a small field. The field raced in line for half a furlong when Silver Streak was showing out from Queen Dorothy and Queen of Song dropped back to the rear. At the six furlong post Queen Dorothy led Silver Streak, Seafox and Davolo. At the far turn Seafox had run to the front from Queen Dorothy, Davolo and Silver

Streak. Seafox led into the straight from Davolo and Silver Streak with Queen Dorothy dropping out. Davolo had Seafox’s measure down the running and he came on to win well by a length and a-half. Seafox hung on to stave of Queen of Song’s challenge for second, and then came Silver Streak and Queen Dorothy. It was rather a decisive win on Davolo’s part. He is engaged at Wyndham and the Invercargill meetings but it is likely that he will race at Waikouaiti and Oamaru during the New Year. Seafox went a good race in this company while Queen of Song was doing her best work at the finish. She did not get a good run in the straight or otherwise she may have been closer. Silver Streak made a dab in the straight but it was short lived. DOUBLE WINNER The confidence shown in High Glee in the Farewell Handicap was not misplaced as he won decisively. From a snap start Pink Del was first out b' ol /* Survoy, Hanlon, Rousseau and High Glee and this was the order out of the straight although High Glee ran into third place. Into the back Pink Del was showing the way to Survoy, Hany lon, High Glee and Rousseau tailing the field. At the far turn Survoy ran up to Pink Del with High Glee and Hanlon handy, while Rousseau also moved up. Racing to the straight High Glee joined Pink Del and Survoy in front with Rousseau next. High Glee came on to win well and Rousseau was the only one capable of challenging him. Rousseau’s rider appeared to be unbalanced in the last 20yds otherwise he may have made it more difficult for the winner. Survoy was a moderate third and then Pink Del. High Glee’s performance was a really good one as he was always on the outer and was made plenty of use of. He is engaged at both Wyndham and .Waikouaiti and it is likely that he will be brought south. He is in the Wyndham Cup and on today’s form would have to be reckoned with. Rousseau should be capable of winning a race before the holidays are over. High Glee was the only double winner at the meeting. KEEN FINISH • Daring Deed was cut out at the start of the Allantbn Handicap and Valarth was first to show out from Double Gift, Song Boy and Salient Knight. Double Gift and Valarth were showing the way at the far turn where Song Boy ran up to them and at the three furlong post he was in charge from Double Gift and Salient Knight. Song Boy led into the straight from Double Gift, Salient Knight and Trivet who had moved up after losing ground early. Song Boy looked a winner at the distance but he was hotly challenged on the outer by Double Gift who just got up to get a head decision. Trivet put in a good run from the back to be third. Valarth, who'dropped back at the top of the straight was fourth, and then came Salient Knight, McHeath and Amy Johnson. It was a useful performance on Double Gift’s part while Song Boy went a surprisingly good race. FERNHILL HANDICAP Nightwings won the Fernhill Handicap after being in the firing line throughout but she may have been lucky in accounting for Norseman who finished with a great run. Palmyra was chopped out at the start while Norseman and Lord Nuffield were slow to move. Gipsy Fair was first to break the line from Top Coat, Gusterina and Night Wings with Lord Nuffield tailing the field. At the far turn Gipsy Fair was two lengths clear of Gusterina, Nightwings, Pink Robe and Norsemans The last-mentioned improved his position rounding the home bend where Gipsy Fair was still clear of Nightwings and Gusterina. Palmyra also made up ground and into the straight Gipsy Fair was showing the way to Nightwings, Palmyra and Norseman. Nightwings soon had the measure of Gipsy Fair and then Norseman put in his claim. He was galloping over everything at the finish but his challenge came too late. Pink Robe got up to be third and then came Palmyra, Gipsy Fair, Natty, Lord Nuffield and Gusterina, well back. Nightwings, who is a half-sister by Nightmarch to the two-year-old Ortyx, hung on well -at the finish but Norseman was a little unlucky. He won on the opening day and should not be long in scoring again. Palmyra did well to finish where she did and the same may be said of Pink Robe who made up a lot of ground over the last three furlongs. Lord Nuffield was a disappointment arid Top Coat was pulled up.
