NEW CHAMPIONS FOUND
Southland Tennis Tournament SINGLES WON BY R. McCALLUM The Southland Lawn Tennis Association’s championship tournament was concluded at the Waihopai Courts yesterday. The conditions for play were ideal and a high standard of tennis was seen in the finals of the chamiponship events. Altogether six championship events and six handicap events were conducted by the association. Following are the winners of the various events: — CHAMPIONSHIPS Men’s Singles.—R. McCALLUM. Men’s Doubles.—-A. J. DEAKER and A. T. BAIRD. Ladies Singles.—MlSS R. WILSON. Combined Doubles.—MlSS R. WILSON and A. T. BAIRD. Boys’ Singles.—J. E. McLEAN. Girls’ Singles,—MlSS L. BARRETT. HANDICAP EVENTS ' “A” Grade Men’s Singles.—C. A. Sharp. “B” Grade Men’s Singles.—B. Mehaffey. Ladies’ Singles.—Miss K. Cutt. Ladies Doubles.—Misses R. Wilson and K. Cutt. Men’s Doubles.—J. Henderson and C. H. Baird. Combined Doubles.—Miss R. Wilson and A. T. Baird. There was a good gallery of spectators to watch the finals of the men’s events yesterday. In the singles championship R. McCallum beat A. J. Deaker in straight sets and in the doubles A. J. Deaker and A. T. Baird beat R. McCallum and W. Strang in straight sets. Following are the results of yesterday’s games:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS MEN’S SINGLES Final R. McCallum beat A. J. Deaker 6-2, 6-3, 8-6. Men’s Doubles Final A. J. Deaker and A. T. Baird beat W. Strang and R. McCallum 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. COMBINED DOUBLES Final Miss R. Wilson and A. T. Baird beat Miss V. Gray and C. A. Sharp 6-1, 6-1. HANDICAP EVENTS * MEN’S SINGLES A GRADE Semi-Finals C. A. Sharp beat W. Strang 9-6. C. H. Baird beat I. Shand 9-5. Final Sharp (owe 30 2-6) beat C. H. Baird (owe 15 5-6) 9-1. MEN’S DOUBLES , Final J. Henderson and C. H. Baird (owe 15 1-6) beat D. S. McLeod and C. A. Sharp (owe 40) 9-2. COMBINED DOUBLES Semi-Finals Miss R. Wilson and A. T. Baird (owe 40) beat Miss Henderson and C. H. Baird (owe 15) 9-4. Miss Farmer and Whitaker (owe 15) beat Miss Hemmings and Buchanan (scr) 9-6. Final Miss Wilson and A. T. Baird beat Miss Farmer and Whitaker 9-7.
