Victory In Auckland Cup TOTE STILL OPEN WHEN A RACE FINISHED (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 27. Ideal holiday weather favoured the opening of the Christmas racing carnival at Ellerslie today when the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting attracted an attendance of 41,501), compared with 38,000 on the first day of last year. The track was fast. The totalizator handled £114,841 10/-, compared with £102,798 last year, an increase of £12,043 10/-. In the opening race, the Queen’s Plate, the race started four minutes ahead of time and the totalizator was still open when the horses had finished. Results were:—

The cup was presented to the owner, Mr Bayley, by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, who congratulated the owner, trainer and jockey. Friesland was first to show out, but after three furlongs Sinking Fund made the running until the home stretch. Passing the stands the first time Sinking Fund was followed by Shy, and Kelly, just ahead of Friesland, Fersen, The Buzzer and Ceme Abbas. Argentic was ninth and Knight of Australia third last. Kelly and Ceme Abbas joined Sinking Fund in the lead at the seven furlong post from Friesland and The Buzzer. Running fast on the rails Knight of Australia was ninth with half a mile to go when Sinking Fund led from Kelly, The Buzzer, Cerne Abbas, Argentic, Jonathan and Knight of Australia. In a bunched finish The Buzzer prevailed by a short neck from Knight of Australia, who beat Argentic by a neck. Kelly was fourth.
