TOURNAMENT FOR “DIGGERS” WIN FOR WINTON RINK The fourth annual “Diggers” rink tournament conducted by the Invercargill R.S.A. Club for soldier rinks in the Southland district was played on the R.S.A. green yesterday. Thirteen rinks competed and the tournament was played on the section system. J. Butler’s Winton rink won the tournament for the second time by beating J. Ure’s Northend rink in the final by 20 points to 10. Ure’s rink won its section outright and lost only one game, the final, Butler’s rink tied for the section, and although he won the fina' he also lost one game. In the final, Winton scored a five on the first end and from then on held the lead. Northend made a bid for the lead over the last few ends, but good drawing by Butler precluded the chance of any “plants” being scored. Butler played consistently well throughout the tournament. In the section games Ure’s rink shaped very well and was favourite for the final, but in the final game none of the rinks played up to form. * The results of the tournament for four years are as follows:— 1934: W. Miller’s Invercargill rink. 1935: J. Butler’s Winton rink. 1936: W. Miller’s Invercargill rink. 1937: J. Butler’s Winton rink.
