THE WEATHER OVERCAST WITH RAIN PROBABLE

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, December 26. Following is the official weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Moderate to strong north-westerly to northerly winds, rising to gale force in some exposed positions. Weather becoming cloudy to overcast and some rain probable. Temperatures warm. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— General Situation. —An anticyclone of slight intensity is moving from the eastern Tasman across the North Island. A rather vigorous low pressure disturbance covers eastern Australia and should begin to affect New Zealand tomorrow. Winds. —Light to moderate and variable at first, with southerlies predominating over the norfhern half of the North Island and west and northwest elsewhere, but northerlies gradually prevailing and freshening about and south of Cook Strait. Seas.—New Zealand waters, slight to moderate generally at first, rising shortly, however, in the far south and later also in the Cook Strait area. Eastern Tasman, winds tending northerly and freshening; seas slight to moderate, but increasing. Weather.—Cloudy, warm and hazy, with occasional misty rain at scattered places in districts with a westerly aspect, but otherwise fair at first. Later rain developing in western and far southern portions of the South Island.

The weather was unsettled in Invercargill during the week-end. Heavy rain fell on Friday afternoon and evening and continued till early on Saturday morning. Saturday was fine,, but rain fell again yesterday morning and the sky was overcast throughout the day. , At one o’clock this morning the weather was calm and fine.
