THE BIGOT IN FAVOUR

STRONG MANAWATU CUP FIELD OPENING OF THREE-DAY MEETING The Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting will open today and will be continued tomorrow and on Thursday. The fields are particularly good and the cup, over a mile and a-half, promises to be a good race. The single pool system will operate. As usual, the Manawatu Cup field presents a wide assortment of form, and includes some who will, not have a ghost of a chance of seeing out a mile and a-half. Catalogue has won over a mile this season, but anything further has found a weak spot in his armour. Master Brierly is one of the pronounced stayers of the field, and age must have dealt lightly with him, as shown in his dead-heat with Jonathan in the Waikato Cup. Hunting Cat has raced like a non-stayer this season, but King Rey’s credentials are fairly good. The Bigot, whose series of finished performances, although meeting with a recent check, have shown him to be a splendid milei will be on trial over longer distances. Lowenberg has been disappointing this season, but is liable to strike form at this time of the year. When Tiger Gain won the Manchester Handicap, a mile and a-quarter, ac Feilding, he had 7.7. Sunee’s failure at Otaki can be discounted. The race was not run to suit him, and he may surprise the spectators on Boxing Day. Gay Hunter shaped like a stayer in a fastrun race at Otaki. Of those further down in the list Boomerang may be the best. He is a horse of only occasional spasms. Horses likely to show up are: MAIDEN PLATE: Haupongi, Scarf Dance, Twilight Song. TOKOMARU HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP: Beau Gallante, Red Sun, Taumau. TARARUA HACK HANDICAP: Maestro, Siegmund, Lustral. MANAWATU CUP: The Bigot, Tiger Gain, Master Brierly. NURSERY HANDICAP: Raratonga, Jeanne, Twenty Grand. GILLIES HANDICAP: Alunga, Great Hope, Free Gold. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP: Lady Ina, Haughty Winner, Deficit.
