DOMINION’S FIRST DAIRY AWARD
Higher Wages For Employees In Factories COURT REDUCES WORKING WEEK TO SIX DAYS The first Dominion award for workers employed in the butter, cheese, casein, condensed milk and dried milk industry has been issued by the Arbitration Court. In general, employment Has been reduced to a six-day week instead of the seven days worked before the passing of the Factories Amendment Act, 1936, and additional rates have been made payable for Saturday afternoon work, Sundays and holidays. Discussing wages, the Court, stated Mr Justice O’Regan, has taken into consideration the fact that dairy factory workers are on duty for considerably longer hours than most other factory workers, and has granted increases accordingly. To some extent the hours fixed last year have been departed from by the Court. The hours of work in the busy season have been retained, but the period over which the longest spread of hours operates has been reduced to a space which the Court a thinks will .conform generally to the busiest months of the season.
