FORECAST MAY SHOW UP

Acting Stipendiary Appointed

ASHAWAY WITHDRAWN FROM WYNDHAM CUP

Mr A. S. Jones, of Timaru, will officiate as acting stipendiary steward at the Wyndham and Southland Racing Clubs meetings.

The two Riverton two-year-olds engaged at Wingatui on Monday have been named. The Te Monanui-Lady Pal colt will race as Atua Rere, and the Irish Lancer-Some Signal filly as Lakomai.

D. J. McDonald has gelded the McLean Stakes winner, Compensate, and he has made a good recovery.

The first race at Wingatui each day will start at 12 noon and the last race at 426 p.m. Southland patrons will be able to see the full day’s racing and return by the evening’s express.

Cottingham, Milford, Petersham, The Surgeon, Trivet, Grand Finale and Ashaway were withdrawn from the Wyndham Cup leaving a good-sized field of 15. In the President’s Handicap, All Humbug and Silver Sail dropped out. At Riccarton on Tuesday morning Davolo finished a neck in front of Dictate with Epic a length away at the end of a mile in lmin 43sec, the first half in 49 3-ssec. All three went pleasingly, especially Davolo.

Ashaway’s engagements were not continued at Wyndham as he is not partial to hard tracks and has been moving very scratchily in his work. Forecast may not be long off the winning list as he has been working particularly well at Riverton. The Weather-

vane three-year-old accounted for a good-class field of two-year-olds at the Dunedin meeting last season when he carried 7.12, Lazybones (7.12) and Top Row (7.10) being in the minor places. Forecast won by three lengths and in view of the progress Lazybones and Top Row have made big things may be expected of Forecast from now on. His young trainer has him, as well as Viking, in excellent order for holiday racing.

At the end of a race in South Australia W. Bastian, a well-known horseman, was fined £2 under unusual circumstances. As he returned to scale after being beaten on a hot favourite Pastian was verbally assaulted by a bystander. Jumping from his horse, he attacked his critic with his whip. Bastian was fined for having dismounted from his horse before receiving permission to do so, but the stewards took no'action in connection with the assault.

P. Spratt has recovered from the injuries he received in an accident and expects to ride at the Dunedin meeting. With so many meetings being held during the Christmas and New Year holidays owners are likely to experience some difficulty in securing suitable riders, and some of the fields may be limited to the number of horsemen available.

During the first three months of the present season the total taxation levied on racing by the Government was £133,763, while the percentage of the totalizator investments retained by the club was only £106,242. In October 1936, the figures were £96,724 and £97,378 respectively. The Valkyrian gelding Delrain is now in A. E. Didham’s stable at Wingatui. He started in 15 races last season. He won once and was placed in three other starts. He won the Higgie Handicap at Wanganui from Full Throttle and Boomerang and four others. At .Taranaki he was third over hurdles to Beau Star and Redolent in 2min 53 4-ssec, with six others outside a place. On the

second day of the same meeting Rua King beat Delrain by three lengths In 2min 58sec over a mile and a-half and 100 yards, with Redolent a neck away third. At Stratford Rua King won over a mile and a-half by three lengths in 2min 53 4-ssec, from Racewhip and Delrain, who was another two lengths away. Redolent was fourth. Delrain was foaled in 1928, and got by Valkyian from Delpeen, by Spalpeen-Delenda, by Obligado.

The reason for Cottingham’s withdrawal was that he was lame after working at Riccarton on Tuesday morning. The trouble was with a tendon and he is to be spelled. He will thus miss his Wyndham and Invercargill engagements also.

Special passenger trains have been arranged by the Railway Department for the meetings at Gore, Winton and Wyndham during the holidays. For Gore special passenger trains leave Invercargill at 9.15 a.m. and 10.25 a.m. and return after the races. For Winton a special train leaves Invercargill at 10.20 a.m. and returns at 5.50 p.m. For Wyndham special trains leave Invercargill at 10 a.m. and 7 0.30 a.m. Return trairt leaves the racecourse at 5.45 p.m. and a later train at 6.8 p.m.
