SWIMMING
TEAM FOR DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS SOUTHLAND COMPETITORS SELECTED The Southland swimming team to compete at the senior championships at New Plymouth next month was chosen at a meeting of the executive of the Southland Swimming Centre last night. It is as follows:—Miss C. Lynch, Miss M. McGrath, A. Branks and K. Shaw. Mrs T. Lynch was appointed chaperone. The team is to leave for New Plymouth on January 5. The meeting was attended by the president (Mr H. W. Ashley), and Messrs A. V. Osmond, G. Rask, O. Davis, J. E. Salisbury, A. E. McGrath, J. C. Kirkland and S. J. Green (secretary).
A meeting of the committee which conducted the recent “Learn to Swim” week was held after the executive meeting. Mr H. S. Baker, baths superintendent, reported that during “Learn to Swim” week 187 Standard 4 pupils had made definite progress in learning to swim, and that more than 2000 school children were admitted during the week. Twice in the week pupils from Waituna had attended, and on the Saturday morning 24 boys from Mataura received instruction.
A vote of appreciation of the good work done by Mr Baker and Mr H. G. Smith, assistant to Mr Baker, was passed. Mr C. N. Lawless congratulated the Swimming Centre on the capable manner in which it had conducted the “Learn to Swim” week. Mr Baker paid a tribute to the work of the officers in charge of the instructions during the week, and the instructors and voluntary workers were thanked for their services.
