CAR STRIKES POLE
WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) WELLINGTON, December 20. An accident in which two persons were injured, one dying later, occurred at Upper Hutt shortly after midnight on Saturday. Charles Naughton Derek Taylor, of Eastbourne, was driving southwards and just before coming into the main part of the township the car left the road and struck a telegraph pole. A passenger, Miss Alison Burch, of Eastbourne, had both legs broken and Taylor received a severe cut on the wrist, also head injuries. The car was wrecked. Both were sent to the hospital. Miss Burch died in the hospital at 3.20 p.m. today. Taylor was discharged from the hospital this evening. GIRL KILLED IN CROSSING ACCIDENT (United Press Association) ROTORUA, December 20. Betty Denise Davies, aged three and a-half years, was killed instantly and her father, William F. Davies, a mill hand, of Ngongotaha, was injured when a car in which they were travelling was struck at the Ngongotaha railway crossing by the afternoon RotoruaFrankton train. The car was carried some distance by the locomotive and was completely wrecked, the child being picked up dead. Although Davies was admitted to hospital, his injuries are not serious. Davies was proceeding to the railway yards from the township and apparently did not hear the approach of the train.
HOTEL LICENSEE FOUND SHOT (United Press Association) THAMES, December 20. A shooting tragedy occurred at Tapu, about 12 miles from Thames on the coast, this morning, resulting in the death of Douglas McKenzie, licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel at Tapu. It is understood that McKenzie had been in the habit of shooting cats which came about the premises and this morning about eight o’clock he took a pearifle and went out with the intention of shooting a cat in a paddock at the back of the hotel. A little later he was found with a bullet wound through the head. He later died in hospital. YOUNG MAN DIES FROM INJURIES Ivan Poole, aged about 26, of Lady Barkly, near Winton, was admitted to the Southland Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from severe head injuries received while he was working on a lime works crushing machine at Limehills. He was unconscious when admitted and died at an early hour this morning.
