“LEARN TO SWIM” WEEK
BIG ATTENDANCES AT FINAL SESSIONS VISITORS FROM COUNTRY SCHOOLS “Learn To Swim” Week ended in Invercargill on Saturday, when the attendances at the Municipal Baths were nearly 1000, including the record number of 409 children admitted in one day on single admission tickets. The early morning period was the busiest morning period for the week, about 105 children attending, and the afternoon and evening periods were also busy. School children from as faraway as Waituna attended the classes on Tuesday and Thursday, and on Saturday morning there was a class from Mataura. Following are the winners of the aggregate points for the week:— A. T. Wilson (30 pts) 1 A. Brown (26 pts) 2 Miss L. Gellatly (25| pts) 3 V. Osmond 4 C. Martin 5 Some of the competitors have put up some surprisingly good times and have shown a big improvement in their swimming. A. Brown and C. Martin performed well with the backstroke throughout the week. The youngest competitor was L. Gellatly, a girl aged 11 or 12 years, and she and B. Hannon were both very consistent swimmers. Following are the results of Saturday night’s races: 50 Yards Handicap—First heat: B. Hannon 1, Miss M. Kennedy 2, C. Martin 3. Time, 0.40 4-5. Second heat: L. Gellatly 1, A. Brown 2, J. Coatsworth 3. Time, 0.37. Final: L. Gellatly and M. Kennedy 1 eq., A. Brown 3, B. Hannon 4. Time, 0.37 1-5. The numbers of children attending school classes during the week were as follows: Monday, 349; Tuesday, 397; Wednesday, 456; Thursday, 415; Friday, 396; Saturday, 950; total, 4496. These figures do not include those who attended the carnival on Thursday night. Although “Learn To Swim” week is officially ended, there is still another week of instruction to be completed.
