MR SEMPLE’S FINGER CRUSHED

MINISTER PROCEEDS WITH INSPECTION (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, December 10. An extremely painful injury to a finger did not prevent the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) from carrying out his inspection of the southern part of the South Island main trunk construction work today. When the ministerial party was leaving the motor-car to inspect some work just north of Parnassus a finger of Mr Semple’s left hand was caught in the hinge of the front door of the car as it was slammed shut and the bone above the top joint was badly crushed. Mr Semple proceeded with the inspection and it was not until a visit had been paid to the Hawkeswood cutting that he was prevailed upon to have the finger dressed. The resident nurse at the railway camp gave first aid, but the Minister was obviously in considerable pain all day. On his return to Christchurch early in the evening Mr Semple had his injury attended to by a doctor.
