SWIMMING

GOOD CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCES

JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE TITLE EVENTS

It was fitting that the Southland junior and intermediate swimming championships, held at the Municipal Baths last evening, should be staged during “Learn to Swim Week. The performances of the children showed more clearly than could any publicity, the practical benefits to be obtained from learning to swim. The physique or the young competitors and their skill and grace in the water must have been a revelation to many of the spectators. No records were broken, but the standard of swimming was of uniform excellence. One of the features of the evening was the performance of L. Barry in the junior boys’ championship events. He won the 100 yards freestyle, and secured second placings in both the 75 yards breaststroke and the diving championship. His defeats in each case were narrow. The most successful competitor in the intermediate boys championship was J. Cameron, who won both the 100 yards and 220 yards freestyle events. L. Blaikie, who carried off the diving title, and R. Duthie, who secured an easy win in the 100 yards breaststroke were also prominent in this division. Miss Joyce Macdonald, who will be a strong contender for a place in the New Zealand Empire Games team as the backstroke representative, showed her versatility by winning the 100 freestyle girls’ intermediate championship in the good time of 74 4-ssec. She had little opposition and was never called upon to extend herself to finish fully 12 yards in front of the second placed competitor. Competition in the junior girls championship was keen, Miss M. Westerby being one of the most successful of the entrants.

Several handicap events, run as part of the aggregate competition for “Learn to Swim” Week, gave variety to the programme, A. Wilson, with five firsts in heats and finals during the evening, is now leading in the aggregate competition with 30 points. A Brown (23), 'V. Osmond (23) and C. Martin (18) are next.
