INVERCARGILL TRACKS

BETTER WORK BEING DONE

GOOD GOING ON THE PLOUGH The tracks at the Southland Racing Club’s course are in firm order at the present time and practically all the work yesterday morning was carried out on the plough which provided good going. With the approach of the holiday meetings more interest is being shown in proceedings. Trebleack and Milford ran six furlongs in lmin 20 l-ssec, and finished on terms. They ran the last five furlongs in lmin 6 3-ssec and the last half in 53 3-ssec. Trebleack has thrown off the effects of a recent cold and was putting some dash into his work, and Milford also appears to have freshened. Irish Birdcatcher (E. Baker) set the mark for the morning when he ran six furlongs in lmin 19sec, the first two furlongs in 26 4-ssec and the last half in 53 l-ssec. He should be capable of running out a solid six furlongs during the holidays. Great Shot sprinted half a mile in 54 2-ssec. He has thrived on the tasks allotted him.

Ocean Singer and Paladino did a useful working gallop over a mile in lmin 56sec, the last five in lmin 15sec. Ocean Singer shaded his companion at the finish.

Boswell and Baitruin were paired over seven furlongs. Baitruin had a slight advantage at the finish, but Boswell appears a lazy worker and had to be stirred up. He has made a good recovery from a rick which put him out of action before the Southland meeting.

Coxcomb was initiated to the jumping business when he jumped a hurdle with the Last Dart novice in W. E. Hazlett’s team. Last Dart did not hesitate and Coxcomb was not slow in realizing what was expected of him. He shaped really well for a newcomer. Waitoru has been taken up again by R. E. McLellan. He has recovered from the soreness which necessitated a spell a short time ago, and the half-brother to Trebleack is in robust condition.

Silver Choir was sprinted half a mile and he did his work well. He has been troubled with unsoundness in the past but so far this season has not been affected in this direction.

Not a great deal has been asked of Ardchoille since his Southland Cup success and he appears to have appreciated this treatment as he seems really well. The Woodend gelding has now won £485 in stakes and although still eligible for hack company, it is likely that his future efforts will be confined to the open ranks in which he will come in on the lighter scale. Ardchoille has not always proved a generous galloper, but a race run to suit him finds him a very hard horse to beat.

Sailing Lady was given a round of strong work and she appears to have done everything expected of her.
