REFUND FROM PRIME MINISTER

PORTION OF GRANT FOR VISIT TO CORONATION

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, December 6. Additional expenditure totalling £1,613,318 for the current financial year' is provided for in the Supplementary Estimates, which were presented in the House of Representatives today. The detailed increases are as follows:—

Legislative Department 4,161 Prime Minister’s Department 548 Finance 25,806 General administration 82,489 Law and order 7,172 Defence 5,054 Maintenance 23,300 Development of primary and secondary industries 204,615 Social services 60,308 Credit public works fund 871,945 Land for settlements 65,000 State coal mines 3,771 State forests account 1,238 Working railways account 91,698 Post office account 219,629 Public Trustee’s account 13,325 Government Insurance account 790 Public Service superannuation 295 State Fire insurance 27,385 Dairy industry account 1,490 Broadcasting account 18,915 With the additional estimates, which make provision for salary increases arising from the reclassification of the Public Service, the total estimated expenditure under all headings for this financial year amounts to £36,341,318. Following are points of interest taken from the various departmental votes:— Land and income tax department. — An additional payment of £1530 for overtime and meal allowances necessitated by the late passing of this year s taxing legislation. Internal Affairs Department.—£looo for allowances and travelling expenses to members of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation; £1313 as New Zealand’s share of the cost of the painting of the Coronation to be presented to his Majesty the King; £6OO for assistance to swimming and lifesaving societies; £3OOO to cover . the preliminary expenses of the national health and superannuation scheme, including salary and allowances to_ an Imperial service actuary loaned to New Zealand; a refund of £1228 in New Zealand currency by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) from the grant of £l5OO sterling for his visit to the Coronation and Imperial Conference. COST OF INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES Labour Department.—-£923 to cover the salaries of the nominated members and officials of the second Arbitration Court; additional miscellaneous payments totalling £4161, principally arising from the increased number of industrial disputes. Police Department. —£200 covering rewards and expenses for the suppression of sly grog selling and the introduction of liquor into prohibited districts and also for the detection of offences against the Dangerous Drugs Act and breaches of the Revenue Naval Service.—£ss4 in settlement of a claim from the Australian tanker Nucula at Auckland. The Army.—Grants of £B5O towards the regimental funds of territorial units; grants of £2OO towards the provision of recreational equipment for the permanent personnel at forts and schools of instruction; Public Works and Services.—Maintenance and repair of river protection works throughout New Zealand, £50,800 for additional plant, the amount of £lOO,OOO provided in the Main Estimates being insufficient to cover requirements for the current year.

Agricultural Department—£4oo for installing experimental equipment to test methods of combating the frost menace to orchards; a grant of £27,000 to cover the establishment of a school of agriculture which will decide a policy of agricultural instruction and allocate to Massey and Canterbury Agricultural Colleges moneys received from Government sources and bequests, additional grants of £15,000 for the railway carriage of lime for farmers; £58,000 as portion of freight rates on fertilizers and £13,000 as portion of freight rates on farm produce. Tourist and Publicity Department — £57,000 for the purchase of film and photographic equipment to be used in special publicity. Scientific and Industrial Research Department. —£250 for the purchase of linen flax seed from England to be grown by selected farmers in Canterbury and Marlborough with a view to establishing the linen flax industry in New Zealand. Mines Department—£Boo to provide additional social amenities in mining towns. ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN Transport Department.—£3soo to cover additional expenses in the road safety campaign; £BOOO for the purchase of motor-cars and equipment from the Main Highways Board. Pensions Department.— A. credit of £160.000 for an amount provided in the Main Estimates, but not required. Railway Construction. —An additional grant of £lOO,OOO for the GisbomeWaikokopu section of the East Coast railway; an additional grant of £lOO,000 for the Wharanui-Parnassus section of the South Island main trunk railway.

Irrigation, Water Supply and Drainage. £lO,OOO on account of the Downs water supply scheme, Canterbury; £24,950, in addition to the Main Estimates vote of £207,000, to cover the general requirements of the Working Railway Account; £60,213 to cover the cost of adjustments because of anomalies arising out of the introduction of the 40-hour week; £28,000 to cover the cost of regrading in the first division of the railway service. Post Office Account.—An additional payment of £20,000 to cover bank exchange, commission, discount and stamp duty necessitated by an increase in money order and other funds remitted to the United Kfhgdom and elsewhere.
