Famous marriage certificates are preserved at Somerset House, London. When George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, was wed in 1669, 22 persons signed the register. The certificate of marriage of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, is dated 1672 and bears the signatures of 46 witnesses.
