TENNIS

PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT FINALS AND SEMI-FINALS PLAYED The annual primary schools’ tennis tournament was finished on the Waihopai courts in excellent weather. The four singles events brought to the semi-final stage the previous Saturday were finished and the two doubles events Were played. The senior boys’ singles was won by Sayer, of Middle School, who showed considerable ability. Sayer and Orr made a good doubles pair and their final against Clouston and Cumming, of Waihopai, was one of the best games of the tournament. Fifteen pairs competed in the girls’ doubles event and 18 pairs entered in the boys’ doubles. Detailed results are as follows:— SENIOR GIRLS Semi-finals.—M. Jamieson (Winton) beat M. McDougall (Waihopai), 6-1; M. Horsburgh (Winton) beat N. Brumby (St. George) 6-0. Final.—M. Horsburgh beat M. Jamieson, 6-1. SENIOR BOYS Semi-finals.—W. Clouston (Waihopai) beat N. Orr (Middle), 6-4; Sayer (Middle) beat Lindsay (Winton), 6-2. Final.—Sayer beat Clouston, 6-2. JUNIOR GIRLS Semi-finals. —P. Fotheringham (Makarewa) beat I. Gibson (Makarewa), 6-3; I. Soper (Makarewa) beat B. Stewart (Waihopai), 6-3. Final.—l. Soper beat P. Fotheringham, 6-3. JUNIOR BOYS Semi-finals. —McDougall (Makarewa) beat Telfer (Waihopai), 6-2; Waldron (Makarewa) beat Cooper (Makarewa), 6-5. Final.—Waldron beat McDougall, 6-0. GIRLS’ DOUBLES Semi-finals.—M. Potts and P. Fotheringham (Makarewa) beat B. Roderique and S. Mitchell (Waihopai), 6-4; M. Marshall and M. Horsburgh (Winton) beat M. McDougall and B. Stewart (Waihopai), 6-1. Final.—M. Marshall and M. Horsburgh beat M. Potts and P. Fotheringham, 6-1. BOYS’ DOUBLES Semi-finals.—Clouston and Cumming (Waihopai) beat Waddick and Soon (Marist), 6-2; Sayer and Orr (Middle) beat Kidd and Randle (Makarewa), 6-0. Final.—Sayer and Orr beat Clouston and Cumming, 6-4.
