WOMEN’S DIVISION

THORNBURY At the December meeting of the Thornbury branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Hall presided over a small attendance. A report of the recent meeting of the provincial executive was given by Mrs Hall. The roll call was, “A Health Hint.

The best bloom competition was won by Mrs Hillis. The baking competitions resulted:—Chocolate butter sponge: Mrs Hall 1, Mrs J. Fallow 2, Mrs J. McLean 3. Sponge Roll: Mrs J. Haywood 1, Mrs J. McLean 2, Mrs J. B. McLean 3. In the most points for the year in the arts and crafts competition, Mrs J. Fallow and Mrs Hall tied for first place. Mrs J. Rance was third. Mr Duncan gave an instructive talk on “The Care of the Feet.” The hostesses for the afternoon were Misses Foster, R. Miller and L. Hamilton. WINTON The monthly meeting of the Winton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently. Mrs J. H. Thomson presided over a fair attendance of members. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mesdames T. S. Smith, J. H. Cox, J. P. McWilliam, J. H. McKenzie, and Mclntosh (provincial president) in their recent bereavements. An invitation to the birthday of the Balfour branch was received. Mrs H. J. McCallum gave an interesting resume of the recent executive meeting held in Invercargill. It was arranged that the dress-mak-ing classes begin in February. Arrangements were left in the hands of Mrs R. King and Mrs H. McCallum. Excerpts were read from the conference report which included a stirring message from the Dominion president. The best bloom competition resulted: Most points for the year: Mrs R. Norman 1, Mrs R. McDougall 2, Mrs G. McLeod 3. The monthly competition resulted: Mi’s J. Robertson 1, Mrs W. Norman 2, Mesdames R. Norman and Buchanan (equal) 3.
