The shrub known as broom has enjoyed an existence in Southland not enjoyed in any other part of New Zealand, but if the wishes of the Southland County Council are granted it no longer will be the ornamental shrub described by Cr T. Golden. It will be classed as a noxious weed. At its meeting yesterday the council decided to ask the Minister of Agriculture to declare broom a noxious week. “Broom is a noxious weed in every other county in New Zealand,” said Cr G. W. Whittingham who sponsored the motion. The meeting had before it a letter from a stock inspector at Gore advising that he could take no action against owners of property in the Riversdale township because broom was not a noxious weed.
