SOUTHERN LAKES OMITTED
ITINERARIES OF NEW ZEALAND VISIT “UNFAIR TO TOURIST” A letter was received at last week’s meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council from Mr F. W. Moore, a passenger in the Monterey, stating that he had met two parties of tourists whose itineraries for a tour through New Zealand were made at New Zealand House, London. These people had a month at their disposal for this tour, but Queenstown and the Hermitage were omitted from their itineraries. The West Coast and Franz Josef glacier were included. After examining their itineraries Mr Moore expressed the opinion that a three days trip from Lyttelton could easily have been included so that the tourists would have had a glimpse of the Lakes District, which the writer had seen on three occasions and considered well worth a visit, particularly after his trip to England, Ireland, Scotland, Holland, Germany and several other countries. The writer stated that this was a matter the council should take up with the Tourist Department. The omission of the Lakes District was unfair to the tourist who had travelled 12,000 miles to see the beauty of New Zealand. Councillors stated that in the tourist business such complaints were not unusual and parties had been known to alter their itinerary and spend a longer time in Queenstown. It was resolved to take the matter up with the general manager of the Tourist Department.
