The Union Company's intercolonial steamer Karetu arrived short!} before 10 a.m. yesterday with mails, timber and general cargo from Sydney. On completion of working she sails for Dunedin. The Blue Star liner Napier Star reached Bluff from Port Chalmers yesterday morning. She loads for the English market and sails on completion for Auckland. The Union Company’s steamer Kaimai finished loading on Saturday afternoon and sailed at night for Dunedin. The motor-vessel Aurora and the launch Tui arrived at Bluff on Saturday from the West Coast Sounds. Both carried cased fish.

To the agency of the Union Steam Ship Company, the Harbledown was to leave Geelong last Thursday with wheat for Auckland and Dunedin, and is due at Dunedin about December 19. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received cabled advice that the Moor Line steamer Orangemoor left Antwerp last Friday week with basic slag for Auckland and New Plymouth. She is due at Auckland on January 22. The Kaikoura, which is on her maiden voyage to New Zealand, left Barrow-in-Furness on November 26 for Halifax where she is expected to leave on December 20 for Auckland. She is due at Auckland on January 22 and will afterwards proceed to Wellington, Lyttelton. Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff to complete discharge. The Port Line has received cabled advice that, after having been delayed by fog. both the Port Brisbane and the Port Dunedin reached London on November 27. The Port Brisbane left Auckland on October 16 for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool, and Glasgow, via Cape Horn and Montevideo, while the Port Dunedin cleared Auckland on October 19 for London, via Cape Horn and Las Palmas. NEW SHIPS FOR AUSTRALIA Reports have been received of five new cargo vessels which should shortly go to Australian shores. The Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand is reported to have ordered a new 6000-ton freighter for trade between Canada. Australia and New Zealand. A new steamer for the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, the Iron Knight, has been launched at Lithgow’s Ltd. yards at Port Glasgow, and was expected to sail for Australia a few weeks ago. The new Adelaide Steam Ship Company’s interstate freighter Beltana was due at Port Pirie some time ago, and carried a full cargo of coke from Gdynia, Poland. After discharge she is to take up coastal sailings along with the Bungaree, a sister ship which has been in service for some months. The two other ships under construction for the same company, the Barossa and the Bundaleer, are expected to be completed early next year. They are 500 tons larger that the Beltana. RECORD TIMBER CARGO A record timber cargo of 7,500,000 ft of Canadian timber arrived at Melbourne aboard the Italian freighter Amsterdam recently. The Amsterdam is one of the largest Italian tramp steamers trading today, and is the first Italian tramp to visit Melbourne for many years. Owing to the deep draught, of 30ft lin forward, 32ft Bin amidships and 30ft aft, the vessel was unable to proceed up the river to the timber berths at South Wharf, and accordingly berthed at Princes Pier, Port Melbourne, where more than 1,000,000 ft of timber were discharged in order to enable her to proceed up the river. Difficulty was experienced in berthing the Amsterdam at Port Melbourne, and it took the services of the two strongest tugs in the port to push the vessel alongside the pier. Several feet from the pier the vessel touched the bottom, but was eventually brought alongside the wharf with a pronounced list to port. The greater portion of the Amsterdam’s timber cargo, 5,500,000 ft was discharged at Melbourne, the remainder being consigned to Fremantle.
