Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” has been ordered to be removed from the public libraries and schools in the state of Rio de Janeiro as part of Brazil’s campaign against “subversive and communist” literature. The action coincided with the Government’s drive against a resurgence of Marxist agitation which led President Vargas recently to declare Brazil in a state of war for 90 days.
