PLANE CRASHES ON BEACH

FOUR PERSONS KILLED AND ONE INJURED BRISBANE, December 3. Four people were killed and one was injured when a plane crashed on the Yeppoon side of the mouth of Barwell Creek, near Rockhampton. The victims were: — KILLED.—James Hayes, aged 54; his son, John Hayes, aged 32; his daughter, Valda Hayes, aged 18; and Kathleen Weaber, aged 16.

INJURED.—Owen Weaber, aged 20 the pilot, who was a brother of Kathleen Weaber.

The party left Mount Morgan in the plane owned by Weaber to spend the day at Yeppon. After taking off from the beach the plane appeared to be in difficulties and unable to gain altitude; it suddenly nose-dived, went into a spin and crashed 200 ft to the beach. James and John Hayes suffered frightful head injuries and were killed instantly; the girls died in hospital. Miss Hayes was the holder of an A class licence and was the youngest woman pilot of the Royal Queensland Aero Club.
