DUKE NOT ALLOWED TO SMOKE
IRON WORKER ENFORCES RULE
LONDON, December 2.
Reminiscent of an occurrence during the Duke of Gloucester’s tour of Queensland, the Duke of Kent was concerned in an incident at a luncheon at Newbattle Abbey, the educational centre, when attention was drawn to the non-smoking rule. After luncheon the Duke and his party lighted cigarettes, upon which Mr Edmund Hughes, an iron worker, who is chairman of the students’ committee, said: “I beg to remind that no smoking is allowed in the dining hall.” After a few moments the Duke, smiling, walked into the lounge to finish his smoke. There were many homely incidents during the Duke of Kent’s tour of the social service centres in the West of Scotland, including the acceptance of gifts for the Duke’s children from the children of Dumbarton.
The tour will conclude today. The King has returned to London after his tour of the Duchy of Cornwall estates in West Country during which his Majesty had an enthusiastic reception. On the drive through Somerset the Royal car was delayed at different points by floods, but the heavy rain did not deter the crowds. In Taunton the car was surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd and the police had difficulty in clearing a way. At Curry Malet his Majesty met England’s oldest woman, Mrs Emma Coat, who is 107.
