OBITUARY

CANON JOHN HASELDEN (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 2. The death has occurred of Canon John Haselden, who was ordained in December 1877 and has served as one of the clergy of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland for nearly 60 years. As a boy he knew Bishop Selwyn. He was born in London 83 years ago and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1860, entering St. John’s College, Auckland, as a Marsh Brown scholar. On his ordination he was appointed assistant minister of the parish of St. Sepulchre, later becoming vicar of Mount Albert. In the early days he did home mission work, riding long distances to visit settlers in isolated areas. In 1893 he was elected as one of the first canons of the diocese. He was subsequently vicar of Onehunga and again at Mount Albert and on resigning the latter post 12 years ago he became Selwyn memorial chaplain to the Auckland hospital, an appointment he had intended to relinquish at the end of this year. For 21 days he was at the wreck of the Wairarapa on Great Barrier Island in 1894. All through the harrowing time of the recovery of the bodies of the victims of the disaster he lived at the island, burying dead and serving as clergyman, doctor and general organizer.
