The wind has persisted now for several days and a very heavy sea is running along the western coast. Since the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war, considerable changes have been made in Japanese shipping. A more rigid governmental control has been introduced, fast cargo vessels like the Tokyo Maru, which was on the Australian run, have been commissioned for the transport of troops and munitions to China, and the coast trade, which was previously closed to all but Japanese ships, has been thrown open to foreign shipping. Here also there are signs of Government influence. It appears that all foreign vessels desiring to engage in coastal operations are required to submit a report giving their purpose in undertaking the trip, their freight rates, etc., and obtain official permission for each trip. This, declares The Japan Weekly Chronicle, is “tantamount to the control of shipping generally.” WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE The following vessels were expected to be within range of the undermentioned wireless stations yesterday:— Auckland: Matai, Endeavour, Kairanga, Karepo, Kauri, Matua, Niagara, Omana, Australind, Columbia, Hertford, Imperial Monarch, Kozan Maru, Middlesex, Myrtlebank, Port Huon, Port Wellington, Tymeric.
