RIVERTON
ROWING CLUB RACES FOR TRAIL SHIELD The annual races held by the Riverton Rowing Club for the Trail Shield, ’have, in past years, always proved an interesting attraction to the residents of Riverton and although inclement weather conditions prevailed when the first of the series of races was held recently, a fair number of supporters and interested spectators witnessed the contests. The strong westerly breeze and state of the tide made rowing conditions most unsatisfactory and the races, with the exception of the first, proved disappointing. Following were the results:— First Race —Bulman (s), Keeler, F. Hopwood and W. Anderson beat L. Dean (s), W. Saunders, R. Lawrence, and J. Anderson by a length and ahalf. This was r> closely-contested race. Dean’s crew was leading over the first 100 yards, but Bulman’s crew, rowing strongly, gradually gained and managed to gain a victory by a small margin. Second Race—R. Campbell (s), A. Beer, F. Haslemore and R. Bailey gained a victory over H. Allison (s), A. Bailey, E. Hill and T. Craig. In the early stages of this race both crews were rowing solidly, neither gaining the advantage, but at the Pearl a member of Allison’s crew, was forced to discontinue because of the displacement of his seat, thus giving the victory to Campbell’s crew. Third Race —J. Fleck (s), W. Bickley, D. Goodwillie and D. Reedie beat N. Hillis (s), A. Weir, R. Hill and Ward. Hillis’s crew had the advantage of the south shore and was rowing steadily with a slight lead on Fleck’s crew, but the same misfortune that occurred to Allison’s crew prevented it from winning. METHODIST CHURCH The members of the Riverton Methodist Church held a most successful sale in the Great Western Hotel sample rooms recently Because of the keen interest of the women of the church in organizing this sale a substantial sum was raised. The following women were responsible for the success of the sale: Mesdames J. B. Blight, F. J. Peterson (Waipango), T. Ward and Roberts.
Bible Class A social evening was held at the residence of Mrs D. Walsh, South Riverton, to mark the occasion of the conclusion of the year’s activities in Bible class work. The evening was spent in games, musical items and competitions. The Rev. J. M. Blight expressed the thanks of the members to Mrs Walsh for the enjoyable evening. Mrs Walsh replied. MAGISTRATE’S COURT (Before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M.) R. Buckingham’s application for a residence site at Orepuki was granted. A first offender was fined £1 and costs for being on licensed premises at Tuatapere after hours. Reginald F. Lee was charged with taking opossum skins at Orepuki withcit a licence. A. J. Beer was charged wit'., not properly marking skins under the regulations. The former pleaded not guilty and the latter pleaded guilty. E. Duncan, the Southland Acclimatization Society’s ranger, stated that he took possession of opossum skins at Dalgety’s which were sent in by Beer. He certified to 101 skins sent but would not certify to the former lot of 73 skins. He interviewed Lee, who gave a statement. An experienced trapper could only obtain the number of skins which were forwarded by defendant, and this indicated that more than one man had been engaged in trapping. . ' Lee stated that he was engaged in cutting tracks and carting traps for A. J. Beer, of Orepuki, said he took out a licence to trap opossums, and as he was not an experienced trapper had obtained the services of Lee to cut tracks and cart traps. He was to get a third of the price of skins. Continuing, Beer stated that Lee did not skin any opossums nor did he bring any skins from the camp. Lee did not visit the camp every day. R. Lee, a labourer of Orepuki, stated that he was approached by Beer to assist him in cutting tracks and conveying traps into the bush. As Beer was inexperienced in trapping he showed him how to stretch skins. He had received £5 for his services. R. Lee was fined £2 and costs, and A. J. Beer was also fined £2 and costs.
