NO MONEY FROM BOROUGH

PROPOSED MEMORIAL FOR CENTENNIAL DECISION OF COUNCIL AT SOUTH INVERCARGILL A decision to inform the centennial executive committee that the council “could not see its way clear to contribute any sum towards the proposed centennial memorial,” was reached after a brief discussion at last night s meeting of the South Invercargill Borough Council. Strong objection to local bodies being asked to contribute to the project was made by Cr W. McChesney. . . “It is not an equitable way of raising money,” Cr McChesney said. lam strongly against local bodies contributing out of their rates to anything outside the borough. And even if we were in favour of the scheme what use would it be if the Southland and Wallace County Councils don’t come into it? There should be other ways of raising money.” Other councillors expressed agreement with Cr McChesney s remarks and the resolution was carried unanimously.
