CHAOS IN SUSSEX CHAPEL
FIREWORKS DURING ORANGE SERMON WILD SCENES IN MARCH AT LIVERPOOL (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received November 1, 7.55 p.m.) LONDON, November 1. Police who guarded the doors were forced to restore order among the congregation at a chapel at Lewes after a service organized by the Loyal Orange Institution in commemoration of the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot and the burning of the 17 “Sussex Martyrs.” Frequently the sermon was inaudible because of reports of fireworks. The congregation left the chapel in chaos—pews were overturned and hymn books and papers littered the floor. During wild scenes at an Orangemen’s procession at Liverpool police charged a crowd in beflagged streets and arrested six persons. Fierce fighting broke out as the Orangemen left St. Silas’s Church. Mounted and foot police with batons swept a shouting crowd before them. Many women were pushed over in the crush; a perambulator was overturned and a baby thrown out during the disorder.
