GLIDER’S ORDEAL AFTER MOUNTAIN CRASH
RESCUE AFTER THREE DAYS WITH BROKEN LEG GENEVA, October 31. After crawling for three days and nights with a broken leg across the forests of the Juras mountains, a young Swiss, Michel Martin, whose glider crashed on the Franco-Swiss frontier, was rescued after a search by •1000 soldiers and many civilians and aeroplanes. His glider was caught by a whirlwind, flung on top of a tree and thence on the rocks. Martin’s nose was broken, and his leg was fractured in two places. He put splints on his leg with branches and strips of his clothing and began to crawl down the valley. He was without a drink for three nights and his only food was berries and snails. Martin has been taken to hospital and is expected to recover.
