THE WEATHER COOL AND CHANGEABLE

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, November 1. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, as issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Moderate to strong south-west to westerly winds, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. Weather cool and changeable,. with passing showers, more especially in the coastal areas. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast: — Weather still for the most part fair to fine, with cold night but mild day temperatures. A few isolated showers probable, however, more especially in districts with a westerly aspect and in the far south. General Situation. —A series of slight secondary depressions is moving across the south Tasman Sea and southern New Zealand while an anti-cyclone of considerable intensity extends from south-eastern Australia across the central Tasman Sea on to the northern portion of the North Island. Winds.—North-easterly at first on parts of the east coast but otherwise westerly to south-westerly prevailing. Light to moderate mainly but freshening at times, especially in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas, and reaching gale force in parts of the latter area. Seas.—New Zealand waters, _ rough about Foxeaux Straits and, at times, in the Cook Strait area. Otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea moderate southerly winds in the northern portion with moderate seas. Moderate to strong west to southwesterly winds in the southern portion with rather rough seas. , The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine, although the sky at times was overcast. A strong westerly wind blew during the day. At one o’clock this morning the weather was cold, with scattered showers. A strong wind blew from the north-west.
