SLUM AREAS IN WELLINGTON
MAGISTRATE’S CRITICISM (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 1. “I have inspected many tenements in the city area during the last two years in the course of my official duties and I can only describe the conditions under which so many people are living as appalling,” said Mr J H. Luxford, S.M., in commenting on a case which came before him in the Children’s Court. “Indeed, I regard the slum areas in this city as a baleful and malignant growth in the human body. A safety first campaign is being waged about the use of motor-vehicles and rightly so, but a ‘slums-must-go campaign’ transcends in importance any other for social betterment and the protection of human life.”
