CYCLING
TEAM FOR EMPIRE GAMES THREE MEN SELECTED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 1. The New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association’s selectors, Messrs T. M. Robinson (North Island) and R. Hill (South Island), announced tonight the road cycling team to take part in the 100 kilometres massed start cycling event at the British Empire Games at Sydney in 1938. The three men selected are:—F. J. Grose (Canterbury), J. Brown (Auckland) and R. Triner (Auckland). Grose is regarded as the finest road rider New Zealand has seen in the last ten years. He represented New Zealand at the British Empire Games in London in 1935. This year he won the Canterbury provincial 50-mile championship in Ihr 55min. He also won the second road trial held in Canterbury last month. Grose’s time of 2hr 40min 54sec compares very favourably with the Australian 100 kilometre record of 2hr 53min 43sec, established in Adelaide last August. Brown is also one of the best road riders the Dominion has produced. He won the Auckland provincial championship of 100 miles last month. He also rode a particularly good race in the first road trial at Christchurch, just being beaten in the sprint home. He was second to Grose in the second road trial at Christchurch. Triner is also a good performer on the track, being a first-class sprinter and also a good time-trial rider, having been fourth in the last New Zealand track championships. He has held fastest time in the majority of the Auckland road races this season.
