Mrs W. Fletcher, Spar Bush, is spending a holiday in Timaru. Mrs D. J. Fairbanks, has been appointed head teacher of the Fairfax school. She is at the Tussock Creek School. Mr and Mrs B. D. Buddle, of Auckland, who have been touring Central Otago, arrive from Queenstown today to stay with Mrs F. A. Webb, Albert street. Mr and Mrs E. Batchelor, of Dunedin, are taking up residence in Invercargill. Mr Batchelor is acting as manager for the new Invercargill branch of H. C. Urlwin Ltd., electrical appliance manufacturers. Mrs A. E. Malcolm, of Dunedin, who has returned from an extended visit to South Africa, Rhodesia and Portuguese East Africa, is staying with her daughter, Mrs F. W. G. Miller, Duke street. Miss Blackmore, head mistress of St. Hilda’s Collegiate School, Dunedin, arrives today to be the guest of Mrs F. A. Webb, Albert street, for the annual dinner of the Southland branch of the St. Hilda’s Old Girls’ Association, which takes place in Elmwood Garden this evening. A New Zealander is laying out the grounds and gardens of the world’s biggest airport, the £1,000,000 creation of the British Government and the Government of the Federated Malay States at Singapore. The great airport, built as an essential link in the Empire

airways, has been made by cutting away a large hill and filling in and draining a nearby swamp. It was completed only a few months ago, and the task of planning the gardens and general lay-out of the grounds has been entrusted to Mrs William Legge, formerly Miss Jean Airey, only daughter of Mr M. E. F. Airey. The latter retired from the position of superintendent of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company in New Zealand a few years ago, and now lives in Nelson. Mrs Legge’s brother is a well-known Wellington cricketer and has represented Wellington. ;.j,’ There was a big attendance in the Orawia hall on a recent evening, the occasion being a kitchen evening in honour of Miss Flora Mclntosh, who is to be married shortly. The function took the form of a dance, music being supplied by Miss R. Brick and Mr D. Brick. Mr Allan Wilson was master of ceremonies. In asking the guest of honour to accept the gifts from the residents of the surrounding district, Mr D. McLaren spoke of the high esteem in which Miss Mclntosh was held, and wished her good luck and happiness. Mr C. Hill replied on her behalf. Some of those present were: Mr and Mrs R.
