GOLF CHAMPIONS HONOURED

QUEEN’S PARK CLUB PRESENTATION OF PRIZES The annual smoke concert and presentation of prizes of the Queen’s Park Golf Club, which was held in the Rosewood Lounge on Saturday night, was attended by over 50 members of the club and visitors from the Invercargill Club. Mr W. G. Tait, president of the club, was chairman. He extended a welcome to members and visitors, and before presenting prizes won during the season, commented on the activities of the club. From an administrative viewpoint the past season had been a hard one, he said. This was not the result of any lack of enthusiasm on the part of members, but principally because of the presence of the number of pressing counter-attractions during the winter. These included the Otago and Southland Rugby matches and the visit of the Springboks Rugby team. Many members were attracted by these fixtures and their absence from the course was reflected in the falling oft of receipts for match entries. Apart from that the club had had heavy commitments in the laying out of the course in accordance with the arrangements made by the City Council so that there would be no need to play across the footway leading to North Invercargill. He was pleased to say that the staff had worked well, and that the new greens were now ready for play, and by the time the next match season came round the surfaces should be in excellent order. Referring to the links generally the chairman said that the fairways and greens never had been in better condition. In congratulating the winners of the various prizes Mr Tait said that there was reason for gratification that in each grade there had been a high standard of golf played, not only in the finals but also in the preliminary rounds. LIST OF PRIZE-WINNERS Prizes were presented to the following winners:—Club championship, J. S. Lindsay; runner-up, G. E. Glennie; intermediate championship, R. T. Barnett; runner-up, P. J. After the presentation of prizes a social evening was held. The principal toast of the evening, “The Club Champion,” was proposed by Mr O. G. Gilmour, who said that the standard of golf in the final between J. S. Lindsay and G. E. Glennie would have done credit to any club. Over the first 18 holes Lindsay had gone round in 74 and all of the holes in the second round had been done in par. It was a noteworthy achievement. The runner-up was also to be complimented on his good golf. He had made one or two slight errors, but on the whole his golf was of a high' standard. In the intermediate grade the final between R. T. Barnett and P. J. Alley had produced some excellent golf and at times the standard equalled that of the higher grade. In reply Mr Lindsay thanked members for the splendid welcome he had been given when he joined the club. It was a pleasure to play golf in such a club as Queen’s Park. The fine spirit existing between the Queen’s Park and Invercargill clubs was emphasized by Mr A. E. Smith, president of the Invercargill Club, who proposed the toast of the Queen’s Park Club. The clubs worked harmoniously and looked forward to the home and home games, he said. They also worked well together in the interests of the country clubs. The chairman, in reply, said that without the support of the officers of the club none of the success gained could have been achieved. He referred oarticularly to the supnort Piven him by the captain of the club, the executive members and members of the club generally. Other toasts honoured were:—“Prize Winners” (proposed by Mr J. C. Kirkland); “The President” (Mr W. S. Ayson); “Kindred Golf Clubs” (Mr H. W. Norris-Mr A. E. Smith): “The Club Staff” (Mr G. Glennie): “Press and Performers” (Mr W. Gellatly). A musical programme was provided by Messrs E. H. Ball. O. Rice, Powell, T. Smith and T. Banks.
