WOMEN’S DIVISION

BRYDONE The fifth birthday party of the Brydone branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union took the form of a concert and dance in the public hall. There was a very large attendance, and the whole programme was presented by Mrs Styles (Waikaka) and her concert party, the programme being as follows: Pianoforte solos, Mrs McPhail; vocal solos, “Bird Songs at Eventide,” “In Our Kale Yard,” “Minuet,” Miss Mairo Smith; musical monologues, “A Cockney at the Cinema” and “If Only,” Mrs Styles; yodelling solos, Mr lan Harris; mouth organ solos, Mr G. Rees; piano-accordion solos, Mr Keith McPhail playette, “The Hat Box”; vocal solos, “Gentlemen, the King!,” “Goodbye” (from the “White Horse Inn”), “Misty Islands o’ the Highlands” and “Old Father Thames,” Mr W. Rees; playettes, “Wet and Windy” and “Wanted—a Chicken!” The accompanistes were Mrs McPhail and Miss Rees. At the conclusion of the concert, Mrs A. G. Davidson, on behalf of the Brydone branch, thanked Mrs Styles and her party for presenting such a splendid programme. Mrs T. Mawdsley (president) then lit the five candles on the cake (which was made by Mrs J. Drysdale), and Mrs Coker blew them out. SOUTH HILLEND Mrs Wilson presided at the monthly meeting of the South Hillend branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The roll call was: “A spring cleaning hint.” It was decided to forward a donation of £l, the proceeds of an exchange table, to the Victoria Home. Parcels of gifts were also forwarded for the Makogai lepers. The competitions resulted: Baking, an oat cake: Miss E. Watson 1, Mrs Murphy 2. Best bloom: Mrs Kirkwood I, Miss J. Wilson 2. A spelling competition was won by Miss E. Watson. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Hazlett, E, Bailey and Miss J. Plunkett. KAUANA At the monthly meeting of the Kauana branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs M. Rabbitte presided over a good attendance of members. It was decided not to celebrate the branch’s birthday this year. The sum of £2 13/- was collected from members for the Makogai leper fund. Mrs J. W. Cowan, East Limehills, gave a report of the country women’s week held in Invercargill. The competitions resulted: Article to cost no more than 1/6: Mrs W. Gill 1. Decorated sponge: Mrs J. Baird 1, Mrs J. Gill 2. Best bloom: Mrs J. Baird 1. TUTURAU The monthly meeting of the Tuturau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently. The roll call, “Kitchen Hints,” was well responded to. A competition for the best pastry was won by Mrs J. Johnston. Mrs J. Williams, Waimumu, gave a demonstration on the dressing of poultry. A committee was formed to take charge of the Tuturau exhibits at the display for the McDougall Cup to be held in Gore early in November.
