Fifty Years Ago Today
(From The Southland Times) OCTOBER 28, 1887 The Day of Exhibition.— lt is proposed to hold an Intercolonial Exhibition in Dunedin in 1889. A large and influential committee has been formed. Not Complimentary.— Talking about the result of the recent elections, “Puff,” in The Evening Press, says that the oddness of the selection made by the people was not the result of chance. It was brought about by a well-known law of nature. There was a great ferment in the country and the scum rose to the top. A Curiosity.— Otto Schreiber, a corporal in the German army, apparently has no blood. Knives and daggers can be run through his body without harming him the least. A committee of distinguished surgeons say that they cannot explain the miracle. Schreiber will exhibit himself in Berlin, London, Paris and America, when his time in the army is up. Bicycle Accident.— One of our local wheelmen met with an accident yesterday which rather shook him up and damaged his machine considerably. He was riding along Dee street and there being a strong wind at the time he appears to have lost proper control o.' the bicycle and to have run into a passing cab. The rider was thrown violently to the ground and the wheel of the cab passed over the machine, rendering it, it is feared, an almost hopeless wreck.
