NEGLIGENT DRIVING OF MOTOR-CAR

ELECTRICIAN SENT TO GAOL (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 27. A sentence of nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Frederick Nicholas Lindbolm, an electrician, by Mr Justice Callan in the Supreme Court. He was also prohibited from obtaining a motor-driver’s licence for five years. Lindbolm was found guilty last week of negligently driving a motor-car so as to cause the death of Mrs Ivy Cavenett on May 9 last when the motor-car he was driving collided with a tram-car just after midnight and Mrs Cavenett, who was a passenger in Lindholm’s car, was thrown out and died from her injuries. The jury added a recommendation to mercy. His Honour said that in September 1936 prisoner was convicted of being intoxicated while in charge of a motorcycle and was fined £5, his driver’s licence being cancelled for one year. There were also eleven previous convictions of various kinds against the prisoner. “My duty is clear,” said the judge. “I am sorry for his parents, whom he is said to be supporting, but this is not a case where a fine would meet the needs of justice.” '
