CRICKET NO CHALLENGE FOR HAWKE CUP DECISION OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE A decision not to challenge for the Hawke Cup this season was reached at a meeting of the management committee of the Southland Cricket Association last evening. It was stated that because of the condition of the association’s finances the expense of sending a team to Palmerston North this season 'was too heavy. The president (Mr H. Grace) was chairman and there were present: Messrs J. S. Brass, D. Agnew, R. Taylor, W. T. Baker, H. F. Drees, R. Swinney, G. M. Broughton and G. Gunn. The Northern District Sub-Associa-tion applied for affiliation and this was granted, the chairman remarking that it was very pleasing to see the game going ahead in the country. The Eastern Southland Association asked for home and home matches this season, and it was decided to grant the request, play to start each day at 11 a.m. in order to ensure a full day’s play. .1 X 1 Arrangements were made to play a friendly match against the Albion Club, Dunedin, at Invercargill on Labour Day. It was stated that the team would arrive on Sunday night and return on the Monday night. The team would consist of five senior players, the remainder being in the intermediate grade. Messrs Grace, Agnew and Broughton were appointed to complete the arrangements. The Southland Rugby Football Union wrote granting the use of practice wickets on Rugby Park and the use of a wicket was granted to the Union Club.

Twenty-nine teams, three fewer than last year, entered for the competitions. The number was made up of five senior teams, nine junioi A, six junior B and nine third grade. I Following is the draw for the opening round of fixtures on October 30: — Senior. —Invercargill v. Appleby; Marist v. Union; Old Boys a bye. I Junior A.—Bluff v. Marist; Invercargill v. High School; Old Boys v. Union; Georgetown v. Railway; Appleby a bye. Junior B.—Kiwi v. Georgetown; Borstal v. Appleby; Railway v. Bluff. Third grade.—High School A v. Appleby; Georgetown v. Old Boys; Kiwi v. Union; High School B v. Marist; High School C at bye. The following transfers and regrades were granted:—L. Radka, from Union to Railway and regrade from first grade to junior A; L. Ramsay from Union to Appleby; H. Canning from Old Boys to Railway. TWO-DAY MATCHES GAMES IN INVERCARGILL A decision to continue to play twoday matches in Invercargill was reached by the management committee of the Southland Cricket Association last evening. The president (Mr H. Grace) said that unfortunately only five senior teams had entered for the competition and this meant that one team had a bye every round. If play was postponed for one week the team with the bye would have no play for three weeks. Mr J. S. Brass, supporting one-day matches, said that in Christchurch, where one-day matches were played, a time limit of two and a-quarter hours was imposed on the batting side. The move had been beneficial and had done a great deal to brighten the game. The president said that one-day matches had been tried previously in Invercargill, but had not been a success. In northern centres there were many spectators at the games, but it was the reverse in Invercargill and they would have to study the cricketers. At’the annual meeting the majority of the clubs had favoured two-day matches. After further discussion Mr G. Agnew moved that in view of the bye j the same system be adopted this year as last in senior and junior A games, no points to be awarded the team having 1 the bye. One-day matches would be j played in the junior B and third grade | games. j The motion was seconded by Mr G. : Broughton and carried. RUGBY FOOTBALL SUGGESTED ALLOCATION OF SPRINGBOKS’ TOUR PROFITS (United Press Association) WESTPORT, October 19. At the winding-up of the season meeting tonight, Mr A. G. Colvin, discussing the profits of the New Zealand Rugby Union from the Springboks’ tour, suggested that after an allocation was made to unions which did not have a match, the parent body should set aside a sum to finance a major unions’ tour annually of the minor union districts and also to send an All Black team on tour, say once in four years, the profits of such matches to go to the minor unions to help build up the game in the latter districts.

Mr Colvin further suggested a greater allocation to schools, as it was there that the foundations were laid for the success of the code later on.
