RIVAL FOR ROBERT TAYLOR?
RAY MILLAND’S GROWING POPULARITY Is it possible that Robert Taylor has a rival? Ardent admirers of the 6ft hero of Nebraska will scorn the idea, but many persons abroad hold the opinion that he will be equalled in popularity by Ray Milland, 6ft lin, from Wales. Milland is like Taylor in appearance, and his mother, who lives in London, proudly declares that he has a better nose. The Welshman is a more advanced actor than Taylor, and he has a good sense of comedy. He has had a more eventful life, but not nearly such good fortune. Milland, who will be remembered foi’ good work in “Three Smart Girls,” says that he first went to Hollywood from London about seven years ago. His first ambition was to be a sailor, his first job was exercising horses at his uncle’s racing stable. Later he joined the Royal Horse Guards, became a useful boxer and a fine marksman. A legacy enabled Milland to resign from the army, and have a holiday touring the gay places of Europe. In exactly a year he was back home and broke. He met Estelle Brody, who took him to Elstree, where he did a little unimportant work. Nearly four years ago he went to Hollywood under contract, and now he thinks he is getting a real chance.
