Miss L. Shand, Riversdale, paid a visit to her parents’ at Rimu recently.
Miss N. Crowe, Wellington, has returned north after a visit to Wairio. Miss Lilyan Byrne, Riverton was the guest of Mrs W. Carran, Mossburn, last week-end.
Mrs J. B. Reid, Alice street, and her daughters will spend next week-end at the Rocks, Riverton. Mrs C. F. A. Jones, Eamslaw street, will spend Labour week-end with relations in Oamaru.
Miss Reid and Miss Lousley, Don street, are going to Queenstown for Labour week-end.
Miss E. M. B. Hannon, formerly of the staff of the Majestic Theatre, has left to take up a position in the north.
Mrs J. McLeod and Mrs F Sercombe, Geraldine, who have been visiting their mother, Mrs J. E. Bews, Dalrymple street, return north tomorrow. Mr and Mrs Robert Mercer, Palmerston North, are spending a holiday in Southland, and are the guests of Mrs J. A. Coveney, Greendale, Grove Bush. Miss I. Murray, Loyola, Edendale, who has been the guest of Mrs W. Kinder, Oamaru, and Mrs G. Cruickshank, Dunedin, has returned home.
Miss Sheila Rankin, Yarrow street, and Miss Berys Macdonald, Princes street, Enwood, will be the guests of Mrs Gilbert Winslow, Mount Benger, Roxburgh, for Labour week-end.
Miss A. Sherborne, of Gore, has been appointed to the clerical staff of the borough council. She takes the place of Miss I. Wilson, who has received an appointment on the staff of the Whangaroa County Council. Mr and Mrs J. A. Coveney, Greendale, Grove Bush, and Mr and Mrs Robert Mercer, Palmerston North, celebrated their silver weddings at the
home of the former on Saturday. Mrs Mercer and Mrs Coveney are the daughters of Mr Neil Stewart, “Ardmain,” Waikouaiti, where they were married 25 years ago by the Rev. J. J. Caimey.
On Saturday evening Mr and Mrs J. Shand, Rimu, entertained a few friends to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest son, John. The evening was spent in games, competitions and cards. Among those present were Mr and Mrs J. Shand, Mr and Mrs Cameron, Mr and Mrs Curry, Mr and Mrs Duff, Mrs Dawson; Misses M. Cairns, L. and J. Shand; Messrs J. Doyle, K. Cameron, J. and G. Shand.
Mrs A. Keen, Wairio, entertained a number of young people recently to celebrate the birthday of her son. Ronnie. Games were played and among those present were Mr and Mrs A. Keen, Mrs F. Keen; Misses M. Steans, M. Keen, E. Steans, B. Latta, V. Steans, E. Mackie, B. Bell, Peggy and Allison Gunn, G. Valli, Evelyn Bates: Masters R. Keen, R. and J. Gunn, J. Valli, W. Gardiner, N. and D. Everett (Invercargill), R. and A. Gordon and T. Bates.
The annual meeting of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Southland Women’s Club was held on Monday afternoon. The chairwoman, Mrs H. H. Petrie, presided. The following office-bearers were elected: Chairwoman, Mrs A. G. Seddon; deputy chairwoman, Mrs G. R. Milward; secretary, Mrs N. Earl; entertainment committee representative, Mrs A. C. Dickens; committee, Mrs A. F. Parfitt, Mrs W. R. Rae, Mrs W. J. Chatfield, Miss E. O’Byme, Mrs S. J. Randle, Miss O. Rein, Mrs H. H. Petrie. Mr and Mrs H. J. Hay, Tapanui, were given a house warming party on Tuesday evening to celebrate the completion of their new home. After the house had been inspected, a dance was held in the Masonic Hall. Mrs Brooke played the music, and Mr R. H. Nicol acted as master of ceremonies. Mr G. M. Levin wished Mr and and Mrs Hay good luck and happiness, and handed to Mr Hay a sum of money to buy a memento of the occasion. Mr J. D. Edgar also spoke, and Mr Hay replied.

Last evening the Invercargill Repertory Society entertained the producer and cast of “To See Ourselves” at supper in the Rosewood Lounge. The president, Mr B. W. Hewat, congratulated Miss Beth Hoyles on her good production, and the members of the cast on their work. Miss Hoyles replied. Those present included Mr and Mrs B. W. Hewat, Mr and Mrs G. F. C. Tanner, Mr and Mrs H. W. Slater, Mr and Mrs Harold Rees, Mrs G. B. Orbell; Misses E. Hoyles, N. Nicholson, N. Swanson, P. Northe, M. Owen, McBain, M. Peirce, N. Macpherson, K. Macpherson, E. Mehaffey; Messrs A. F. Gilkison, H. E. Russell, E. G. Furby, P. Macnamara, and V. Le Petitt.
