WHIPPET RACING
(By

The Invercargill Club’s meeting last Saturday was an enjoyable afternoon’s sport and several very fine finishes aroused the enthusiasm of those present. Some well-grown pups lined up for the Nursery Handicap, of 100 yards. The winnei- was Windsor Lad, a particularly well-proportioned pup by Pelorus Jack-Moretta, by Fleet Pepper-Lady Be Good. The runner-up, Herd Laddie, ran a good race, but found the winner too speedy on the day. The Novice Handicap, of 200 yards, was won by Mr J. Gellately’s Honest Maid, by Havaspot-Gunrest, who was too experienced for the rest of the field and won fairly comfortably from Brindle Madam and Colleen Ogue. The latter looked a likely winner 50 yards from the post, but failed in the run home. The Second Class Cup Handicap, of 200 yards, was a good race. Mr R. Hawes’s Hot Shot won the final after a fine race. The winner is a likely winner of an open race shortly. War Pixie was decidedly unlucky and, with a better start, would have seriously troubled the winner. Eighteen Carat was placed second. , The Open Handicap, of 200 yards, resulted in the best finish of the day, Margaret Bell winning by a short head f rom Eighteen Carat, Donaldson and Lady G, the other finalists. Donaldson and Margaret Bell were first and second in the first heat and Eighteen Carat and Lady G were similarly placed in the second heat. In the final the backmarker, Lady G, was always closing on the other three and did well to finish with only heads between the four dogs. , The Maiden Hurdle Race, of 200 yards, all off scratch, showed some fine young jumpers. Honest Maid completed the double for Mr J. Gellately, with Princess Be Good and Suncup finishing second and third respectively. The Open Hurdle Handicap, of 200 yards, promised a good finish, all the contestants jumping well at the penultimate hurdle. Jean Batten and Tnx Be Good drew clear, Trix Be Good outjumping Jean Batten to win comfort/ably with Flying Shadow and Lady G finishing well from the back Members are reminded of the annual meeting to be held on Labour Day night, October 25. The remits from the annual conference held in Christchurch recently are now to hand and members will notice several changes in the handicapping system. , ... Mr A. J. Keenan produced his pup Maori Song in good order, but lack ot track training told in the finish of the puppies’ race. Jean Batten was a bi,< disappointment in the cup race last Saturday and perhaps is getting too much road work. More ball work will improve this good young dog wonderfully. The next meeting of the Invercargill Club will be held on November 13. A full programme has been approved and members will no doubt be keen to give their dogs a final try-out before the Invercargill Cup. * Mr M. Winders is gradually getting Flying Shadow back to form and this well-bred dog will be in great order for the big cup race. It is reported that Mr J. Tathamhas disposed of Brindle Madam to Mr Cundall, who should soon be winning races with this well-bred young dog. Mr B. McDonald’s Littleman is not showing the form he displayed a few months ago and will need plenty ot work if he is to win a big race prophesied a short time ago. Suncup ran a fair race last Saturday, after being off the scene for so long.
