LEPERS ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE
TERROR IN RUMANIAN HOSPITAL (Received October 18, 7.5 p.m.) BUCHAREST, October 18. Brandishing knives and sharp instruments stolen from the surgical ward, 70 lepers attempted a mass escape from an infectious diseases hospital at Tichilestu, a desolate spot in the mos-quito-infested marshes of the Danube delta. Terror-stricken nurses and the doctor were driven off by the lepers, who attempted to set fire to the hospital. The arrival of detachments of gendarmes in lorries prevented a disaster. They surrounded the leprosarium and after several volleys had been fired over their heads, the lepers threw down their weapons, fell on their knees and begged forgiveness. Several were slightly wounded. The ring-leader escaped.
