WINTON

CRICKET FIRST COMPETITION MATCH At Winton on Saturday the home team beat Fairfax in the first match of the Central-Western competition Fairfax won the toss and put Winton in to bat. The runs were scored at a fair pace, the top-scorers being W Simmers 33, Rawle 27 and McKenzie 20 Dyer took five wickets for 26 runs Fairfax was soon out for 65, Rawle taking six wickets for 16. Winton batted for one over in the second innings and declared, leaving Fairfax 90 runs to get in 35 minutes, which it failed to do, Bews taking six wickets for 26 runs and McKenzie three for 16. In declaring the courts open, the president, Mr R. Driscoll, said he hoped the club would have a more successful season than last year. Mr L. de la Perrelle, president of the Winton Club, thanked the club for its co-operation at all times and for the use of its courts for various tournaments. BOWLING CLUB OPENING Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the opening of the Winton Bowling Club. There was a large attendance of visitors from the various clubs, the local Returned Soldiers' Association and Citizens Club being well represented. The green and surroundings were in perfect condition. The president, Mr F. Tilley, in de-, daring the green open for play, extended a welcome to members and visiting bowlers. Miss M. Tilley rolled the first ball. During the afternoon a match was played between teams representing the president and the vicepresident, which resulted in a win for the latter by a narrow margin.

WYNDHAM TENNIS SEASON OPENED One of the most successful opening day tournaments in years took place on Saturday afternoon, the weather being perfect and the attendance large. About 40 players, including a few visitors from Edendale and Menzies Ferry Clubs, participated, and although only two courts were available, the capable management of Dr J. H. Baird (president) enabled the tournament to be completed quite early in the evening. The results were as follows:— Section A.—J. T. Robertson and Miss C. Traynor (3) 6 points, W. L. Stewart and Miss Z. Traynor (scr) 4 points, C. G. Davey and Miss M. Harley (2) 2 points, W. Hansen and Mrs Hansen nil. Section B.—G. Burgess and Miss H. Strang (10) 4 points, Gibson and Mrs A. E. Woodward (scr) 4 points, E. Pankhurst and Miss N. Rice (7) 4 points, E. Scott and Mrs Scott (-4) nil; Burgess and Miss H. Strang won this section on, the count back. Section C.— C. A. Sharp and Miss S. Strang (1) 6 points, A. T. Strang and Miss H. Baird (-2) 2 points, E. S. Macfarlane and Miss G. Gaw (7) 2 points, C. W. Rout and Mrs Rout (1) 2 points. Section D.— R. M.
