A decline in the number of persons committed to New Zealand prisons during the year ending March 31, 1937, is reported by the Controller-General of Prisons (Mr B. L. Dallard) in the annual report to Parliament on prisons and Borstal institutions. “The total number of receptions, 3813, has continued steadily to decline over the past years, the aggregate number received in 1936 being 346 fewer than during the previous year,” says the report. “The number of distinct prisoners received, which eliminates consideration of interinstitutional transfers and receptions of short-sentenced persons more than once in the same year, was 1790.
