MISS BATTEN AT DARWIN
TRYING JOURNEY IN DUST AND HEAT DELAY IN START OF FLIGHT TO ENGLAND (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 17, 8.45 p.m.) DARWIN, October 17. Miss Jean Batten arrived from Winton (Queensland) after an uncomfortable journey through dust and heat. The engine of her plane has to be cleaned, and there is little hope that she will begin her solo flight to England before Tuesday. Miss Batten is interested in Mr H. F. Broadbent’s attempt to break the record from England. If he succeeds Miss Batten “hopes to ' return the compliment.” Mr Broadbent holds the solo record which Miss Batten will attempt to break on her coming flight; she broke his record for the outward journey on her last flight from England. On her arrival at Winton yesterday Miss Batten stated that at times she was forced to fly so low between Mount Isa and Camooweal that she barely cleared the tree tops. She would have her machine overhauled at Darwin, and might not leave before Monday morning for Koepang.
