(From The Southland Times) OCTOBER 18, 1887 Cricket—The opening match of the Invercargill Club will be played this afternoon (weather permitting), between sides chosen by the president and vice-presidents; to commence at 2.30 p.m. sharp. The City Band will play during the afternoon. Circus. —Messrs Herbert and Fitzgerald’s circus is well and favourably remembered in Invercargill and the public will therefore be pleased to hear that it will open in town for a two-nights season on the 24th inst. The agents, Messrs Fitzgerald and Johnson, have already arrived and are busy making the necessary preparations. Fire.—Shortly after nine o’clock yesterday evening the fire-bell sounded an alarm. The building destroyed was an old cow-shed on the race-course reserve, owned by Mr W. Macpherson (now in Victoria) and leased by Mr William Hall. Fireman T. Mills, of the Invercargill Brigade, was on the spot quickly, but beyond cutting down a portion of a fence, and thereby saving the remainder, his services were scarcely required. The police were in attendance in strong force, SergeantMajor Ramsay, Detective Ede and Constables Joyce and Mclntyre being present.
