EDENDALE

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD MAIN STREETS TO BE TAR-SEALED At the monthly meeting of the Edendale Town Board, Commissioner W. Irvine presided over Commissioners R. Wilson, R. K. MacDonald, V. Hickey, G. Dempster and W. Chaplin. In the course of his monthly report to the board, Inspector R. Blair said he had spent some time patching up the tennis courts. The board’s concrete mixer had been hired out once and returned in good order. ■ The report was received. It was decided to instruct the inspector to clean up the streets at the entrance to the main streets. The Transport Department wrote advising that the board’s speed limit signs had been placed at suitable points within the town; About the sign on the Edendale-Seaward Downs highway, it was considered that the sign should be brought closer to the town. The letter was received, and it was decided to act on the department’s advice. , The secretary of the local branch of the Plunket Society wrote advising that Nurse Burnett had asked her to express thanks for the renovations carried out to the board room, which was also used as the Plunket Society s rest room. The chairman remarked that evidently the money had been well spent. The letter was received. The chairman said he had consulted Charles Begg and Co’s, traveller about the town hall piano, and had received an offer of £4O for it. The traveller, however, had expressed the opinion that the piano was a good one and well worth having repaired, which would cost about £6 10/-. After discussion, it was decided to have the piano repaired. Advice was received that the boards requests to have the main streets tarsealed had been granted, and further details were revealed in a letter from Mr G. R. Milward, the Southland County Council’s engineer, who wrote as follows:—“I am in receipt of your letter of September 15, in which you inquire as to the .width to be sealed. I have to advise that it is intended to seal the full width of the road between the footpaths for the three main blocks in the town —for one block on the Edendale-Wyndham highway and two blocks on the Edendale-Seaward Downs highway. The remaining lengths of the work—one block on the Edendale-Wyndhai.i highway and one block on the Edendale-Seaward Downs highway —will be s' led 18 feet wide in the middle of the road reserve. I will look into the question of a culvert across the Edendale-Wyndham highway, and if this is necessary „at this point, it will certainly be put in. Gratification was expressed by members at the reply received.

tapaNui FIRE AT WHISKY GULLY DESTRUCTION OF BUSH A fire broke out at Whisky Gully, Tapanui, recently and fanned by the high wind soon spread, destroying much of the bush. Apparently the fire began in the adjoining properties and was probably caused by some one carelessly throwing down lighted matches. Had it not been for the efforts of a few willing workers the entrance to the

gully where the amusement area. is would also have suffered. Rain setting in during the evening checked the fire, but many of the larger trees though still standing, are scorched and will probably die, and the young trees and native plants are completely burnt out SPRING SHOW The Tapanui Horticultural and Industrial Exhibit Society’s spring show was this year a great success, £lB 5/being the takings at the door. Much interest was taken in the home industry bays, a new section in which there were 14 entries. The judge, Miss Murray, Clinton, said that the work shown was of a very high standard. Miss Murray’s awards were: Henot Women’s Institute 1, Crookston Women’s Division 2, Tapanui Womens Division and Tapanui Girl Guides equal 3. The vegetables were judged by Mr J. Pullar, and because of the unseasonable weather during the autumn the exhibits were few in number and this section was disappointing in quantity. Mr Norman who judged the cut flower and decorative sections stated that most of the narcissi had passed their best and this made less competition in the cut flower section. Anemones, polyanthus and Iceland poppies were very good and tulips much more ahead than is usual at this time. The school section, judged by Mrs Cockerill, showed some excellent work, and Mrs Erridge, who judged the industrial exhibits, remarked on the excellent work shown. CONCERT AND BAZAAR A successful concert and bazaar was held by the Heriot and Park Hill Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union in the Heriot Hall. Mr M. J. McFadgen was chairman. A good programme was given. . During the evening good business was done at the various stalls, the produce and work stall, bran tub, Busy Bees stall, and sweets stall all meeting with a good demand for their products. Shooting, nail driving, and quoits were well patronized. Miss G. Fleming was the winner in the women’s shooting and Mr J. McCann in the men’s. The winners of the nail driving were Mrs A. Walker and Mr T. McElwain. Mr E. Walker won at quoits. KENNINGTON LODGE MEETING At the last meeting of the Rebekah Lodge an installation ceremony was held.
