GORE CRICKET WYNDHAM BEATS CELTIC JUNIORS A friendly match was played on the hostel grounds on Saturday between the Celtic junior team and Wyndham. The match resulted in a win for the visitors by a good margin of runs. Celtic batted first and scored 97, H. Hobbs batting well for 29. J. Marshall was in good form with the ball for Wyndham and took five wickets for 22 runs. Wyndham scored 132, Harper being topscorer with 46 Several Celtic bowlers shared the bowling honours. The Gore Club The Gore Cricket Club played a friendly match on the hostel grounds on Saturday, when C. Barron’s eleven 148 (Kershaw 30, Hom 28, Kerr 20 and Stewart 17) beat Currie’s eleven 137 (Currie 59, McMullen 17, Campbell 16). Bowling for Barron’s eleven Adair took three wickets for 28 runs, Walker three for 8 and Campbell two for 21. Kerr took three wickets for 30 runs for Currie’s eleven, and Reid three for 12. BOWLS The weather was ideal on Saturday for the opening of the Gore Bowling Club. There was a> large number of members and visiting bowlers present and the green was officially opened by the president (Mr E. J. Columb), who welcomed all present and wished the club a successful season.. Mitchell, Casey, Raines, Murray — 19 Totals 137 147 TENNIS There was a big attendance of members and visitors at the opening of the Citizens’ Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon. The courts were opened for the season in brilliant sunshine and Mr F. McKenzie (club captain) extended a welcome to those present, expressing pleasure at seeing such a large attendance. A tournament was held during the afternoon and Miss N. Parsons won the women’s section, while W. Leishman won the men’s section. PERSONAL Mr E. Somers Edgar, who has been attached to the staff of H. and J. Smith, Ltd., Gore, for a number of years, has received an appointment on the staff of P. H. Vickery Ltd., Invercargill. He was farewelled on Saturday by the staff of H. and J. Smith, when a small presentation was made. NATIONAL PARTY At a meeting of delegates from all the branches of the National Party in the Mataura electorate Mr R. S. Green presided. Messrs T. McDonald and H. G. Wallis, the delegates to the Dominion conference, gave a brief account of what was being done in the north and stated the impressions they had formed in regard to spheres of organization still to be touched and methods to be adopted. A discussion took place on the selection of a candidate for next election, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, having expressed at the conference the wish that candidates should, if possible, be chosen before Christmas. It was decided to insert an advertisement calling for nominations. Such nominations would be dealt with by a selection committee about the end of November. Mr L. Colboume, the organizer for the Otago and Southland division, spoke briefly on the progress made in other electorates, and, while complimenting Mataura on what had been done, pointed out that there was still much ground to cover.

MATAURA CRICKET OPENING MATCH OF THE SEASON Under ideal conditions the Mataura Cricket Club held its opening match of the season on Saturday, when a friendly game was played between teams representing the captain and the vice-cap-tain. Maley lbw b English 0 Extras Total 81 Women’s Club The annual meeting of the Mataura Women’s Cricket Club was presided over by Mr J. H. Clark. The annual report stated:— The club experienced a very successful season, both from a financial and playing point of view. It took part in the Invercargill competitions, and some enjoyable games were played with the Wyndham Women’s Cricket Club, and also with teams from the Brydone and Mataura dairy factories. Congratulations are extended to the Collegiate Club on winning the competition. Thanks are extended to Dr Groves, Mrs A. N. MacGibbon, and Messrs J. H. Clark, T. Bogue, J. Corbet, T. G. Boyd and A. Marshall for their generous help and donations, also to Mr J. Maley for his help in coaching the team. During the season the following players were chosen to represent Southland: —Mesdames J. Maley, M. Webb, and Misses H. Maley and C. Baker.” The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l9 13/11. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The president said that although the “grounds bogy” had not yet been overcome, the reserves committee of the Borough Council was doing everything in its power to provide sufficient playing areas for the various sports bodies. Webb, Misses H. Maley and R. Barclay. The subscriptions were fixed at 6/for old members and 4/- for new members.

Opening day was fixed for October 23 and it was decided to invite the Wyndham team to play a friendly match on that date. The secretary was instructed to send a letter to Mrs J. Maley, conveying the sympathy of the club in her recent illness, and wishing her a speedy recovery. Several new members were elected. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ REUNION The annual reunion of the Mataura Returned Soldiers’ Association was held recently. Mr E. Hunter’s orchestia was in attendance. Mr W. Patterson, president of the association, welcomed those present and pointed out that the membership was steadily increasing. He paid a tribute to Mr I. Cullen, the secretary, and to Mr A. Cockburn, the representative of the War Funds Association, for the excellent work they were doing. He also praised the work of the Gore executive which, he believed, was unsurpassed by any other Returned Soldiers’ Association executive in New Zealand. The toast “Fallen Comrades” was honoured. The “diggers” stood in darkness while the “Requiem” was sung by Mr J. Hart, and the “Last Post” sounded by Mr E. Hunter. In proposing the toast of the New Zealand R.S.A., Mr S. E. Smith stated that at a recent reunion at Hedgehope Mr Hargest M.P., had said that although in Parliament, the various parties might be at loggerheads, when the returned soldiers went into committee all grievances were forgotten and they worked together splendidly.

RIVERTON WALLACE HOSPITAL BOARD At the monthly meeting of the Wallace and Fiord Hospital Board, Mr J. H. Smith (Otautau) presided over the following members:—Messrs F. J. Dyer, W. B. Hopcroft, F. J. Linscott and Miss H. Hunt. The chairman made reference to the death of Mr J. G. Johnston, who had been a representative of the board for 27 years, and, with the exception of Mr Dyer, was the oldest member on the board. A motion of sympathy was passed in the usual manner. The secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital Board forwarded a copy of a communication which his board had sent to the Hospital Boards’ Association. The Palmerston North Hospital Board felt that if the proposal to repeal Section 92 of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act, 1926, was proceeded with strong representations should be made to the Minister to protect districts situated as it was. The letter was received. The district public trustee wrote stating that the Reginald McKinnon Trust had decided to grant £25 to the board’s funds. . The medical superintendent (Dr E. S. Fossey) reported as follows:—“Patients remaining from August, 16 males, 11 females; admitted during September, 36

males, 25 females; total treated, 52 males, 36 females; patients discharged during September, 27 males, 23 females; patients remaining at September 30, 23 males, 13 females.”
