Competition Matches Begin

SENIOR B GRADE AND INTERMEDIATE The Southland Lawn Tennis Association’s competition matches were begun on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal and matches were played under the best possible conditions. Senior B and intermediate grades matches were played. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association announces that A. C. Stedman who is now residing in England, has accepted an invitation to play at various New Zealand tournaments, including the Dominion championships. Stedman will arrrive by the Arawa on December 2 and remain in New Zealand until February. C. E. Malfroy did not accept a similar invitation. BROMWICH METROPOLITAN CHAMPION (Received October 17, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 17. In the Metropolitan tennis tournament at Strathfield on Saturday J. Bromwich won the men’s singles championship, defeating Neil Turvey 6-4, 6AUSTIN COVERED COURTS CHAMPION (Received October 17, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 16. In the final of the covered courts tennis championship H. W. Austin defeated K. Schroeder (Sweden), 6-2, 3-6, 7- 6-2. In the semi-finals Austin defeated J. Borotra (France), 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
